A walk is an event

Starting this week, when you create an event, the first suggested activity is a walk. Before football, before drinks. Some found it odd: it is not the coolest activity, it produces no spectacular photos, it has no league.

But it has three properties no other activity combines.

The lowest threshold there is

No gear, no skill, no court to book. There is no level: the group moves at the group’s pace. A walk is the only event you can genuinely invite anyone to, from the eighty-year-old neighbor to the person who just moved here and knows nobody.

Above all: walking makes people talk. Side by side, without the pressure of face to face. Walking-group organizers have always known this; we just saw it confirmed in our events data: walking-group chats stay alive longer than any other kind.

A default is an opinion

The activity grid is an implicit ranking of what we think is worth doing together. Putting the walk first is our way of saying: starting matters more than performing.

If your first event on Convosphere is putting one foot in front of the other with three strangers from the neighborhood, that is a win in our book. Football can wait until next week.
